Though, it was later, in the year 2000, when VC funds started funding agencies and digital companies that are named after founder\u2019s cats and dogs, this trend of predicting trends, well, really became a trend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the time of the year when new jargons enter the marketing narrative, some slow-burners suddenly peak and a few others vanish altogether.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes, \u2018jargons.\u2019 We love them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Archeological studies with carbon-dating techniques have revealed that writing about trends or \u2018predicting\u2019 them is the \u2018lowest hanging fruit\u2019 in the journey to establish \u2018thought leadership.\u2019 Earlier, the stories were available only on rock faces. Now, it is all up in the \u2018cloud\u2019 and are \u2018device agnostic.\u2019 As white papers, brown papers, blogs, and more. A search on Google for \u2018Digital Marketing Trends for 2013\u2019 resulted in 119 million listings. And another 137 million listings for 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2013, the big buzzword was Big Data. By the time most people could read about it, fill a few slides in a PPT (with animation and big fonts), and attend a course at IIPM on Big Data, a \u2018Laddu phoota\u2019 in some futurists\u2019 mind. It seems Big Data is not enough. The world has moved away from Big Data to Smart Data and Big Insights! Oh boy! The PPT now needs an \u2018iteration.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then there are some trends that are capable of trending every year. For 6 years, some trends remained the same with minor changes in English. From \u2018Next year is the year of mobile\u2019 to \u2018Next year really is the real year of real mobile\u2019 and everything in between. Mobile indeed is portable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to one biscuit\/cookie, \u2018real-time marketing\u2019 was well established last year. The fallout is that we all are scrambling for \u2018newsroom strategies for brands\u2019\u2014whatever that means. In the meanwhile, another \u2018cookie\u2019 is apparently crumbling. Expert investigators are trying to do some \u2018Fingerprinting\u2019 techniques to find who killed the \u2018cookie.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just when we all thought that we understood \u2018multichannel\u2019 marketing, this tweet from an opinion leader threatened everything\u2014\u201cOh you are not ready for an \u2018omni-channel\u2019 consumer strategy that integrates multiple touch points enabling seamless storytelling and delivering delightful experiences.\u201d Wish my ancestors had left me some land for farming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a growing industry, trends also need to grow. A modest growth though. Every year should have one extra trend than the preceding year. So 2010 had Ten Trends, 2011 had Eleven Trends, 2013 had Thirteen and so on.
