Kittu, Bittu, Boni, Bunny, Goldy, Channi, Babbi, Dimpa. This is no kindergarten roll call but a list of ‘‘surnames’’ adopted by some of the candidates who fought the hotly-contested Punjab elections…… (a report in Indian Express about Punjabi politicians adopting universal, forever young nick name).
But have you heard about these names? – Gladoo, Calgoo, Zattoo, Zingee, Jambo, Famundo, Koonjy……. Certainly not politicians. These are some of the websites that fall under the new genre of web 2.0 sites. Every other day there is a new site that will allow you to share your files, your thoughts, your voice, your…whatnot. It is all about ‘you’. Their mission, it seems is to make life simpler, productive and purposeful for you. Web 2.0 was the divine intervention that needed to save the world.
So there is Zattoo which allows you to take your TV to work, Calgoo helps you to schedule your life, Famundo claims that it helps families to take control of their lives (oh! all that takes to control your life is a website!), Gladoo that allows you to search IT jobs. Then there are a different set of interesting names. KyotoPotato.com, because the earth needs you. Timetomeet.info helps you confirm meeting with others, ‘without sending too many to-fro e-mails’. Towncrossing.com is a plain vanilla community site. You need it when you are at crossroads in your life. At menuism.com, you rate the food you eat. The best ‘ism’ happened after communism?
This is a tip of the iceberg. Checkout www.go2web20.net, the only directory of all web 2.0 initiatives with a listing of about 1000 sites. Explore and have a great Life 2.0
